Trouble with UpdateListItems

Can anyone give me a clue why this function gives me a javascript error 'Object expected'?  I am sure I am just missing some typo at this point.

function rejectRequest(reqID){
		$().SPServices({
			operation: "UpdateListItems",
 			listName: "RequestTOMembership",
 			ID: reqID,
 			valuepairs: [["Status", "Rejected"]],
			debug: false
		});
}; //close function

From a DVWP I am passing the @ID as the reqID. The ID is correct and valid on the RequestTOMembership list. Other SPServices are working on the page, but not this one. I am loading the following library files:
jquery-1.4.2.min.js
jquery-ui-1.8.4.custom.min.js
jquery.SPServices-0.5.7.min.js
spjs-Utility.js
I am hoping that I have just forgotten some important syntax and this can be cleared up quickly.
Thanks in advance!

I don't see anything obviously wrong. You should use the completefunc to see what the Web Service is passing back in the SOAP response:

   completefunc: function(xData, Status) {
     alert(xData.responseXML.xml);
   }
