restricting entries in the "Title" column of a Sharepoint list

I have reviewed with SPServices how I can ensure that a column entry is unique or provide autocomplete.  However, what I am trying to do is:

1) Restrict the entries in the "Title" column (linked to edit) to the following "Project", "Stage" and "Exception".

2) Once "Project" has been used once it can't be used again.

I am trying to restrict myself to client side customization vice the use of SPD.  I am working in SharePoint 3.0 WSS.  Personally I think the best way would be by replacing the default "Title" as a single line of text with a drop-down selection box but haven't figured out how to do that.

Is there a way that JQuery/SPServices could be used for this?  Any ideas?

Your requirements are somewhat unique. You could use SPAutocomplete to suggest the three options to the user, but it isn't set up to require using one of them.

Since your requirements are so specific, I'd suggest that you write your own script to instantiuate the rules. The Title column is as simple an input control as there is. so it's really easy to work with.
