Use StartWorkflow on Site Workflow

Dec 31, 2012 at 4:47 PM

I've got a site workflow that takes a list of email addresses as a parameter and shoots off a notification email to those address. It's not associated to a list because I'll be creating several list entries that are all related to one group of individuals, and I only want to send one notification for the group of them. So, I'd like to trigger the site workflow programmatically using the StartWorkflow operation.

Does anyone know if this is possible and, if so, what to do with the "item" parameter? So far I've tried passing null, or just leaving it out, and I'm getting a POST error (500 Internal Server Error). I'm guessing it has something to so with the item url not being present.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm having the same issue. I'm getting 500 ("Internal Server Error")
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="" xmlns:xsi="" xmlns:xsd=""><soap:Body><soap:Fault><faultcode>soap:Server</faultcode><faultstring>Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown.</faultstring><detail><errorstring xmlns="">itemUrl</errorstring></detail></soap:Fault></soap:Body></soap:Envelope>
It look likes ItemUrl is needed, but I wan't to run the site workflow not assigned to any list.

Is it possible?

I was never able to get this to work, personally, but I didn't spend too long on it before giving up and doing without it. Hope you have better luck!

It looks like that http://servername/_vti_bin/Workflow.asmx web service is used and it takes a parameter wich you have to specify the item, so I think that it can't run site workflows. Is there any other posibility to run the workflow from javascript (SP2013)?

sharepoint web services documents does say to use an empty string, so it can be called. tried empty javascript string, did not work.
