Filter and Count List items

I am trying to find a way to create a summary table, and eventually a bar chart for a task list in SharePoint.

My main columns of interest are Location (choice field), Name (Person or Group), Status (another choice field). I need to get a table, filtered by location, that has names listed on the rows and a count of tasks that are "In Process" and "Complete" in two columns.

As far as I can tell, CAML Query does not have an option for counting and the only way to do this would be an export to an excel document and create a pivot table. This is not ideal since it is not a live update of information. Is there another way?

You can do the filtering in CAML and then process the individual items client side. Unless you have a prohibitive number of items, it should work fine.

I'm sort of old school and tend to build stuff like this myself, but you should also look at frameworks like knockout.js.
