Noob question - how do I query just one piece of data from one row?

Every example of SPServices I've found involves doing calculations on large lists or creating arrays. All I need to do is query the value of a field for one specific item. For example:

I have a list with 5 items, each with their own % Complete field. I simply want to bring back the % Complete value for the item where Title = "Bug Fixes". I will need to store that value in a variable.

How can I pull back just the value of this Number field?

I need to do this for 3 items and store the corresponding number in a separate variable for each.

You would use GetListItems, specify the CAMLQuery to retrieve the item(s) you want, and set the CAMLViewFields to return the columns you need.
