Multi-select lookup hitting list threshold limit - spservices to the rescue?

Jun 2, 2015 at 2:27 PM
I have a multi-select lookup in a document library. The lookup is hitting a list with +5K items. I can definitely filter the query down to just the items I need (around 20-50 at any given time). Can SPServices help in this particular case?

What I've done in cases like this is to "reimagine" the column. I've done things like adding autocomplete for a text field or using a tagging library to add values. Another option is to use Managed Metadata instead of a lookup column.

The issue with the former is that you're effectively creating your own column type and you have to manage it everywhere. In the cases where I've done this, it's worked well for me, though.

For example, you might just store something like this in a Single line of text column: 1;#value1;#2;#value2. That mimics the way SharePoint stores lookup column data under the covers.
